Starting from an introduction to fiber lasers, basic properties of fiberamplifiers are reviewed and current state of the art fiber amplifier technologyis summarized. The course then describes preferred construction methods forultrafast fiber lasers and frequency combs and discusses their applications ina variety of optical systems. The course covers mode locked fiber oscillators,phase stabilization techniques, supercontinuum sources, ultrafast fiber amplifiers,frequency converters as well as pulse compressors. Numerous design examples aregiven, illustrating the recurring physical phenomena governing these systems.The attendee learns about preferred methods for pico- and femtosecond pulsegeneration in compact fiber systems and basic modeling techniques for pulseevolution, stability, jitter and noise. The course concludes with overviews ofapplications in materials processing, frequency metrology, spectroscopy andoptical sampling.
